Author bio

Miranda Jarrett is the historical-romance pen name of American novelist Susan Holloway Scott. Scott was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in northern New Jersey, where an early interest in art and history gave her a lasting taste for the past.

Before settling into a writing life, she attended art school and then studied art history at Brown University. After graduating, she worked in university relations at Brown, Bryn Mawr College, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Her first published novel came under the Miranda Jarrett name. Steal the Stars, an American Revolution romance about a smuggler caught between danger and love, appeared in 1992. It opened the door to a long run of historical romances, many of them set along the colonial New England coast, in Regency England, or in Europe during the Napoleonic era.

The sea keeps turning up in these stories.

The early Jarrett books include the sprawling Sparhawk family saga, beginning with Columbine and continuing through The Secrets of Catie Hazard. These romances follow generations of a Rhode Island family through changing times, with ships, storms, war, inherited grudges, and hard choices always close at hand. The Fairbournes of Cape Cod books, starting with The Captain's Bride, return to a similarly maritime world, where captains, shopkeepers, and travelers build lives across the Atlantic.

Scott also used the Miranda Jarrett name for Regency and Georgian romances with a little more London intrigue. The Silver Lord and The Golden Lord bring smuggling, secrets, and titled brothers into the mix. The Penny House novels, including Rake's Wager, The Lady's Hazard, and The Duke's Gamble, center on three sisters who inherit a London gaming club and refuse to give up either their independence or their compassion.

She likes a capable woman with a problem to solve.

Under her own name, Susan Holloway Scott shifted toward historical novels about real women living near the centers of political power. Books such as Duchess, Royal Harlot, The King's Favorite, I, Eliza Hamilton, and The Secret Wife of Aaron Burr look past the famous men in the record and ask what life cost the women around them. The research is there, but the stories stay focused on private fears, loyalties, love, and survival.

Scott has written more than fifty novels and novellas under her various names, including Isabella Bradford. She has also served on the executive board of Romance Writers of America. She lives with her family outside Philadelphia, in what she has described as a book-filled house.

For Miranda Jarrett readers, the appeal is straightforward. These are romances with movement: ships leaving harbor, families pulling in different directions, old secrets surfacing, and people trying to choose love without losing themselves.
