Author bio
Lin-Manuel Miranda was born in New York City on January 16, 1980, and grew up in Inwood, at the northern end of Manhattan. His parents are of Puerto Rican heritage, and he spent time during his childhood with his grandparents in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. Those places, the languages he heard, and the neighborhoods around him would stay close to the center of his work.
He attended Hunter College Elementary School and Hunter College High School, where he performed in school productions and started writing. Broadway cast albums, hip-hop, salsa, and R&B all mattered to him early on. Rather than treating those sounds as separate worlds, he was already looking for ways to put them in the same room.
Music was never just background noise.
At Wesleyan University, Miranda studied theater and film and began writing the first version of In the Heights. The student production gave him a starting point, but the show changed over many years as he worked with playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes, director Thomas Kail, and a growing group of collaborators. It eventually arrived on Broadway in 2008, telling interwoven stories of work, family, love, and uncertain futures in Washington Heights.
That neighborhood was more than a setting. It was the point.
In the Heights helped establish the mix that readers and listeners now connect with Miranda: fast rhymes beside quieter ballads, big ensemble numbers, and characters who are trying to build a life without losing their connection to home. The show won four Tony Awards, including one for Miranda's score, and its cast recording also earned a Grammy.
His next major stage project began with Ron Chernow's biography of Alexander Hamilton. Miranda turned the life of the immigrant, soldier, writer, and statesman into Hamilton, writing its book, music, and lyrics and originating the title role. The musical moves through the American Revolution and its aftermath with rap, R&B, pop, traditional theater songs, and tight wordplay. It won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, while the Broadway production earned 11 Tony Awards.
Readers who want to get closer to the work can start with Hamilton: The Revolution, created with Jeremy McCarter. It combines the full libretto with Miranda's notes and stories from the show's development. In the Heights: Finding Home, written with Hudes and McCarter, follows the long path from a college idea to a Broadway musical and then a film. Gmorning, Gnight! takes a different route, gathering short messages of encouragement that Miranda first shared online, with illustrations by Jonny Sun.
Miranda's writing has also reached film, where he contributed songs to Moana, Vivo, and Encanto. He has acted on screen and on television, directed the film adaptation of Tick, Tick... Boom!, and remained involved with Freestyle Love Supreme, the improv hip-hop group he helped found. Across these projects, he often comes back to ambition, family, history, community, and the question of how a person belongs somewhere.
He lives with his family in New York. Through the Miranda Family, he also supports work connected to arts access, representation in public life, reproductive health, and Puerto Rico's recovery and resilience.
