Author bio

Megan Miranda grew up in New Jersey, reading widely and paying attention to the small mysteries of everyday life. Those early years, split between suburbia and visits to her grandparents in the Pennsylvania mountains, planted the seeds for the isolated towns and wooded landscapes that run through her books.

As a teenager she attended the Peddie School, where she leaned hard into math and science. That curiosity carried her to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she studied biology and learned to think in experiments, patterns, and what-if questions.

After college Miranda worked in biotechnology, then shifted to teaching high school science. In the classroom she spent her days explaining cause and effect, building models of invisible systems, and watching how teenagers talk, argue, and protect their secrets.

At some point she realized the questions she loved most no longer fit neatly into a lab report.

She wrote on the edges of her schedule, early in the mornings and late at night, turning stray ideas into scenes and then into full drafts. What happens after a near-death experience? How far would someone go to protect the people they love? Over time those questions took shape as her first published novel, Fracture.

Published in 2012, Fracture follows Delaney Maxwell, a girl pulled from an icy lake who wakes from a coma with an unsettling ability to sense when others are about to die. The book blends medical mystery, first love, and survivor's guilt, and it set the tone for Miranda's early young adult novels, including Hysteria, Vengeance, Soulprint, The Safest Lies, Fragments of the Lost, and Come Find Me.

In those stories she often writes about teens standing on the edge of big decisions, haunted by what came before. The threats can feel otherworldly or technological, but the heart of each book is the same: friendships under strain, families hiding painful history, and young characters trying to decide who they want to be.

With All the Missing Girls she turned to adult psychological suspense and found a new audience. Set in a small North Carolina town and told in reverse, the novel follows Nicolette Farrell as she returns home to confront two disappearances a decade apart. The unusual structure let Miranda play with memory, perspective, and the stories communities tell about themselves.

She has continued to explore those ideas in later novels like The Perfect Stranger, The Last House Guest, The Girl from Widow Hills, Such a Quiet Place, The Last to Vanish, The Only Survivors, Daughter of Mine, and You Belong Here. Many of her books unfold in tight-knit places with long memories: coastal communities divided between locals and summer visitors, mountain inns shadowed by missing hikers, and lake towns living with old tragedies.

Again and again, her stories return to the uneasy mix of fear, loyalty, and curiosity that shapes how people behave when the past refuses to stay buried.

Miranda now lives in North Carolina with her husband and two children. She still draws on her scientific training when she outlines a thriller, mapping timelines and clues with the care of a lab experiment, then letting the characters surprise her. The result is a body of work that feels both tightly constructed and deeply human, inviting readers to wonder what might be hidden just beneath the surface of the places they think they know.
