Author bio
Mike Wells writes the kind of novels that move fast and keep changing shape. His catalogue moves from international crime thrillers to young adult science fiction, romantic suspense, horror, and even romantic comedy, but the books tend to share a few things: sharp hooks, short chapters, strong forward motion, and characters who get pushed hard.
He started out as a screenwriter, and that background helps explain a lot. His fiction is built around scene, pressure, and momentum. Readers who come to him through Lust, Money, and Murder usually stay for that same feeling in the rest of his work, whether the setting is a counterfeit ring, a teenage sci-fi mystery, or a dangerous romance.
His road into fiction was not especially smooth.
Wells has said he began writing seriously around age thirty, and success did not arrive overnight. In his early forties, in the mid-1990s, he self-published Wild Child, a young adult sci-fi thriller, after the usual round of rejections from agents and major publishers. The book had an odd afterlife. Years later, when ebooks opened new doors for independent writers, he discovered that Wild Child had found readers after all, and that surprise helped push him toward publishing more of his fiction digitally.
That pivot mattered.
From there he built a career book by book, often around high-concept premises that are easy to grasp and hard to forget. In Lust, Money & Murder, Elaine Brogan turns family tragedy into a long international hunt through the world of counterfeiting and organized crime. Passion, Power & Sin follows Heather Bancroft into a money-making scheme that looks glamorous until it turns cruel. And The Tesla Secret imagines what happens when lost Tesla research falls into the wrong hands.
He has also kept writing for younger readers. Wild Child, The Wrong Side of the Tracks, and The Mysterious Disappearance of Kurt Kramer show another side of his work, one more focused on adolescence, first love, fear, and the strange intensity of being young. Even in those books, though, he still likes pressure. A mystery, a chase, a secret, a wrong turn. Something always gives the story a hard edge.
Wells lives in Europe and has taught in the Creative Writing program at the University of Oxford. In interviews, he comes across as practical about the work itself. He has talked about rewriting openings again and again until they hook, and about his wife serving as his story editor and first reader. That focus on revision shows up in the books, which are designed to engage quickly and keep moving.
He also seems comfortable changing genres without making a big fuss about it.
That may be the simplest way to describe his appeal. Mike Wells is not locked into one lane. If you want a long international thriller series, he has one. If you want romantic suspense, eerie horror, or young adult sci-fi with a strong hook, he has that too. Different shelves, same engine. He likes sharp premises, high tension, and stories that do not hang around.
