Series background & context

Co-written with Devika Fernando, Forbidden blends romance with class tension, secrecy, and the kind of danger that comes from entering someone else's world on unequal terms. At the center of the series is the relationship between Jayne Clark and Lady Eleanor Sotheby, a pairing that brings attraction and mistrust together almost from the start.

That imbalance is the whole point.

Jayne is drawn into a world of wealth, influence, and old power that looks glamorous from the outside but quickly reveals darker edges. Eleanor is not simply a love interest standing in a prettier room. She is tied to history, status, and hidden motives, which means the emotional stakes are tangled up with questions of control, vulnerability, and whether desire can survive unequal footing.

The first half of the series plays like romantic suspense with a strong pull toward betrayal. The books are built to make readers ask whether Jayne is being protected, manipulated, or both. That uncertainty keeps the romance active instead of decorative. Love is not a pause from the plot here. It is the plot's most unstable element.

Later books deepen that sense of aftermath and inheritance. The second arc, associated with Lady Sotheby's curse, suggests that the past keeps reaching forward, even when Jayne tries to build a new life. That gives the series more than a simple will-they-or-won't-they framework. The relationship has consequences, and those consequences keep moving.

If you enjoy romance that carries real threat, Forbidden is one of the clearer examples in Wells's catalogue. It keeps the emotional focus close, but it never forgets suspense. The result is a series where chemistry matters, secrets matter just as much, and every step deeper into the relationship makes it harder to tell whether Jayne is moving toward love, danger, or both at once.
