Series background & context

Renata's Revenge opens with an ugly act of violence and then asks a blunt question: what happens when the system refuses to protect the person it failed? Renata Richardson takes a summer job on a Mediterranean beach expecting escape. Instead, she becomes the target of a brutal assault by wealthy men who assume money and influence will keep them untouchable.

They choose the wrong woman.

That line is the whole engine of the series. Once the local police dismiss her, Renata stops waiting for justice and starts building her own. She follows the private jet that brought the men in, studies tiny identifying details from the attack, and turns herself into a hunter. The premise is harsh, but it is tightly focused. Renata's intelligence and memory matter as much as her anger does.

What makes the story more than a simple revenge fantasy is the structure of the pursuit. Each target leads to the next. False identities, disguises, travel, and careful planning turn the book into a cross-border cat-and-mouse thriller. Renata is not just lashing out. She is investigating, infiltrating, and forcing her way up a chain toward the person who orchestrated the whole crime.

The added pressure comes from law enforcement. An FBI agent is after her too, which gives the story a double chase. Renata is hunting men who think they are safe while also trying to stay ahead of the person determined to stop her before she reaches the top.

If you want one of Wells's hardest-edged books, Renata's Revenge fits that slot. It is built around rage, pursuit, and the cold practical work of making powerful people afraid. The tone is darker than some of his other thrillers, but the appeal is familiar: a determined protagonist, mounting tension, and a story that keeps moving because stopping is not an option.
