Series background & context

Co-written with Farsheed Ferdowsi, Blind Scorpion is Mike Wells in straight espionage mode. The central figure is Dr. Ross Shaheen, a nuclear scientist whose life in the United States looks solid and respectable until a trip to Iran drags him into a struggle over dangerous knowledge, national loyalty, and survival.

At the center of it all is the Blind Scorpion program, a piece of software tied to the simulation of nuclear explosions and their effects. That is the kind of secret that instantly makes Ross valuable to multiple governments and intelligence networks. Once he is inside that world, the series stops being about one professional trip gone wrong and becomes a story about pressure from every direction.

That is where the trilogy gets its real bite.

Ross is not built like a swaggering action hero. He is a scientist and family man, which makes the tension different. The question is not just whether he can outfight the people around him. It is whether he can think clearly, protect the people he loves, and decide what he owes to the country where he built his life versus the country that still claims part of his identity. That split gives the series its emotional core.

The setting matters too. The books move through a tense international landscape shaped by surveillance, back-channel deals, rival agencies, and the constant possibility of betrayal. Even when the plot is handling state-level stakes, it still stays grounded in Ross's personal fear that one wrong move could cost him everything.

If you are coming to Mike Wells for fast pacing but want less romance and more geopolitical tension, Blind Scorpion is a good fit. It has the hooky, cinematic feel that runs through much of his work, but here the emphasis is on espionage, shifting allegiances, and the moral exhaustion of being useful to people who do not care whether you survive.
