Spiral of Need

by Suzanne Wright

2015

Seer Ally Marshall, unwanted by many packs, finds wary refuge with the Mercury Pack and its cynical Beta, Derren Hudson. Their mutual distrust turns to fierce loyalty as they face old grudges, prophecy, and an enemy determined to tear Ally away from her new home.

Series background & context

Mercury Pack is a companion series to The Phoenix Pack, focusing on a smaller, rough-edged wolf pack made up mostly of former outcasts. It starts with Spiral of Need, where Seer Ally Marshall, distrusted because of her gift, finds herself thrown together with Derren Hudson, the pack's surly Beta who thinks he hates Seers.

From there the books track different couples tied to the Mercury wolves, including Harley and enforcer Jesse in Force of Temptation, human innkeeper Gwen and broody wolf Zander in Lure of Oblivion, tormented Bracken and loner cat shifter Madisyn in Echoes of Fire, and weary Head Enforcer Eli with fierce hybrid Casey in Shards of Frost.

These stories lean into the idea of a refuge for misfits. Many of the leads come from abusive packs, criminal families, or rough human backgrounds, and Mercury Pack territory becomes a place where second chances are possible but trust has to be earned.

Plotwise, the wolves juggle human extremists, suspicious shifter councils, and power-hungry Alphas who would happily steal their land. Because the Mercury and Phoenix packs are so closely linked, big events in one series often echo in the other, and several books effectively cross over both casts.

The tone is classic Wright, sharp banter, unapologetic steam, stubborn protective males, and heroines who refuse to be overrun. If Phoenix Pack feels like the heart of her shifter world, Mercury Pack is the grittier, more tight-focused side of the same universe.
