The Nightmare in Him
by Suzanne Wright
2024
In the second Devil's Cradle novel, another powerful outsider takes refuge in the monster city and finds themselves tethered to an Ancient whose idea of protection is as unnerving as it is addictive. Their relationship unfolds against mounting tension between Aeons and Ancients and the creeping sense that nightmares are waking.
The Wicked in Me
by Suzanne Wright
2023
Executed as a child and mysteriously dragged back from the afterlife, witch Wynter Dellavale flees the Aeons who want her dead and hides in Devil's Cradle, a sanctuary for monsters. There she draws the obsessive attention of Cain, an Ancient embodiment of jealousy, and becomes a key piece in an immortal feud.
Series background & context
Devil's Cradle is one of Wright's darkest worlds, set in a hidden city that gives sanctuary to beings most people would call monsters. The Aeons, an ancient first civilization, once exiled seven terrifying entities known as the Ancients, and those Ancients now rule the city together.
In The Wicked in Me, witch Wynter Dellavale survives an execution attempt as a child and returns from the afterlife changed, her magic warped into something "tainted". When the Aeons move to erase her again, she flees to Devil's Cradle and ends up bound to Cain, an Ancient tied to the concept of jealousy.
The sequels, The Nightmare in Him and The Monsters We Are, stay in the same setting but shift the focus to other Ancients and outsiders who find themselves pulled into the city's strange politics. Each couple has to navigate brutal power structures, soul-deep bonds, and the constant interference of the Aeons.
Tone-wise, this is still very much Wright, with sarcastic banter, explicit romance, and loyal found families, but the stakes feel sharper. The characters wrestle with resurrection, curses, and what it means to be genuinely monstrous in a world that insists some people are born to rule and others to kneel.
If you like her demon books and want something even moodier and more magic-heavy, Devil's Cradle builds a new corner of her universe that still links thematically to the rest, found families, morally gray protectors, and heroines who refuse to bow.
