Where should I start?
If you want Colin's story from the true beginning: Druid Blood → Blood Scent → Junkyard Druid
If you want the core urban fantasy run: Junkyard Druid → Graveyard Druid → Moonlight Druid → Underground Druid
If you want a darker spinoff: Shade Cursed → Shade Hunted → Shade War
If you want post-apocalyptic monster action: THEM Invasion → Incursion → Counteraction → Extinction
Author bio
M.D. Massey writes the kind of fantasy that likes to get dirt under its nails. His books mix Celtic myth, modern Texas, monster hunting, and a steady stream of smart remarks, but the road to fiction was not a straight line. Long before readers met Colin McCool, Massey was first and foremost a reader, the sort who fell hard for stories early and never really got over it.
He has said his mother was a teacher, and when he was little she let him pick out Little Golden Books at the store. That habit grew fast. By the time he was still short enough to disappear behind a library counter, he was already reading books like The Odyssey and The Silmarillion.
Books got to him early, and they stayed.
Like a lot of writers, he started by reading widely and then trying his hand at writing himself. In his twenties, a journalist friend encouraged him to write and publish a nonfiction book, which led to several nonfiction projects over the years. He has also spoken about shelves full of copywriting manuals, survival books, and martial arts guides, a mix that helps explain why his fiction feels both practical and a little wild. Before fiction fully took over, he spent years working in consulting and around martial arts.
The big turn came in 2013. Massey has said that reading James Scott Bell's Plot & Structure was the moment the lights came on for him as a novelist. He finished and published his first novel that same year, and that opened the door to the Druidverse, his shared setting for urban fantasy, dark fantasy, and post-apocalyptic stories. An even earlier seed was Colin McCool and the Vampire Dwarf, a YA novella he later reworked into Druid Blood.
Most readers find him through Colin McCool. Books like Junkyard Druid, Graveyard Druid, and Druid Justice follow a young Texas druid who would really prefer a quiet life, but keeps getting dragged back into fae politics, monster cases, and god-sized trouble. Readers who stay tend to like the fast pace, the banter, and the way Massey folds Celtic lore into a very modern setting. He also likes big connected worlds, which is why Colin's story spills into later arcs like Druid's Folly and beyond.
He does not stick to one lane. Shade Cursed turns toward a darker antihero in Crowley, a shadow wizard with a stolen past. THEM Invasion and the rest of the THEM books shift into a ruined Texas full of undead, vampires, and werewolves, with a harder post-apocalyptic edge. Across the different series, certain interests keep returning, family under pressure, damaged students and mentors, hidden power, loyalty, and what it costs to keep fighting when quitting would be easier.
Even when the monsters get big, the stories stay personal.
These days Massey lives in the Texas Hill Country with his family and an oversized American bulldog that, by his account, supervises the work. He writes, reads, and still makes time for martial arts, which probably helps when a fight scene needs to feel like it might actually hurt. That mix of myth, grit, and Texas humor is all over his fiction, and readers looking for a long-running fantasy world can settle in for a while.
