Sing Roses For Me starts with Max Allen at a low point. He is a fallen country singer trying to get away from disgrace and figure out who he is when the spotlight is gone. On the islands he meets Michelle, a cruise-ship dancer who gives him a real chance at love. At the same time, thirteen-year-old Carla Cecil, a brilliant child prodigy, is caught in the orbit of Bradford Doss, a respected Texas judge whose public image hides cruelty and predation. A Ouija-board message is the spark that links these lives and warns that something terrible is coming.

The series gets dark quickly.

What keeps the first book moving is the way separate threads slowly tighten into one knot. Max's search for a new life, Michelle's place in that future, Carla's danger, and Doss's growing threat all build side by side. The mood is emotional and tense, but it never loses sight of the human side of the story. Max is not a clean-cut hero. Carla is brilliant but still a child. Doss is frightening because he knows how to hide in plain sight.

Serpentine Roses keeps the same world but widens it. The story jumps into the early internet years as teenage friends Forde Alexander and Adrian Montgomery create a software empire, with Carla now old enough to advise them. Success does not make them safe. Adrian, gifted, rich, and emotionally exposed, becomes vulnerable to Lennon Diamond Wellesley, a beautiful heiress with psychopathic streaks and no real conscience. As Lennon pushes for total control, the danger spreads outward to Forde, Carla, Max, and everyone tied to them.

That shift is part of the appeal. Max gives the series its name, but the real through line is how damage travels through families, friendships, and love affairs. One book leans harder into music, romance, and hidden evil. The next adds wealth, technology, manipulation, and the pressure of being hunted. Across both books, Marney keeps returning to the same question: what happens when decent but wounded people are forced to stand up against someone who feels no remorse at all?
