Ben Marney Books in Order

Ben Marney was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and he has spent most of his working life making a living with his voice. He started young, working as a late-night radio DJ while still a teenager. Long before he published novels, he was already a singer, songwriter, producer, and road musician.

For more than four decades, he and his wife Dana toured widely as entertainers, playing bars, nightclubs, theaters, and major cruise lines. Their work took them across all 50 states and around the world. Marney has said those years put him face to face with the kind of people, heartbreaks, and strange moments that later found their way into his fiction.

The music career was not small, either. He has said he charted three Billboard Top 100 singles, owned a nightclub and a music theater, and opened for artists including Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams Jr., David Allen Coe, Rich Little, and Larry Gatlin with the Gatlin Brothers. That kind of working life, half glamour and half grind, shows up all through his books.

He built a second long career in voice-over work too. Marney has voiced thousands of commercials, narrated television programs for Discovery, Destination America, and Sportsman, and even spent time as the voice of the Free Bird Southern Rock channel on SiriusXM. His fiction has some of that same spoken quality. It is direct, fast-moving, and interested in keeping you listening.

Writing came later, but not out of nowhere.

Marney has said he first started writing poetry as a teenager because he wanted to impress girls. That led to hundreds of songs, and eventually to prose. He studied architecture in Texas for a time, at the University of Houston and Sam Houston State University, but storytelling kept pulling harder, and in 2017 he released his first fiction novel, Sing Roses For Me.

That debut shows what he likes to do. Sing Roses For Me mixes a fallen country singer, a child genius, romance, and murder, while Serpentine Roses takes the same world into wealth, tech, and fresh danger. In Children Of The Band, he turns to the children raised inside the chaos of touring rock bands. In From Ashes, he returns to music again, this time through a man burned by Nashville and trying to find his way back to himself.

Music never really leaves his books.

Even when the lead character is not a performer, Marney tends to write about people whose lives have been knocked off course. An August Harvest starts with an architect whose life is shattered in seconds. Another Lifetime Ago follows a former Marine and lawyer searching for the woman he never stopped loving. The Feel Of The Wind adds a former Navy SEAL, a mysterious woman, and mafia trouble. Across all of them, he comes back to grief, suspense, romance, family secrets, and last chances.

His nonfiction side is visible in Lyrics Of My Life, a collection of autobiographical short stories drawn from years on the road. He has openly said his novels are partly truth and partly fiction, and that feels right: the books are full of musicians, wanderers, beach towns, dangerous men, damaged families, and people trying to begin again.

These days, he appears to be based in Florida and focuses mainly on writing and voice-over work rather than the old cruise-ship circuit. Even so, the performer is still there. You can feel it in the way his stories lean into big emotions, sharp turns, and characters who refuse to go quietly.
