Jayne Allen is from Detroit, and that city still shows up in the directness, ambition, and humor of her work. She studied engineering at Duke University and later earned a law degree at Harvard. Long before she published fiction, she was moving between very different worlds and learning how people carry pressure.

That path was anything but narrow. Before readers met Tabitha Walker, Allen spent years working as an attorney, then years more as an entrepreneur and marketing executive. In her own telling, writing kept tugging at her long before publication, first in poems and lyrics, then in story ideas that started taking up more space than class notes and meeting notes.

Eventually, the stories stopped being a side project.

Her fiction debut, Black Girls Must Die Exhausted, first appeared in 2018 and later reached a much wider audience in a new edition. Set in Los Angeles, the novel follows TV reporter Tabitha Walker, a woman whose carefully managed life is shaken by fertility news, work pressure, and the exhausting gap between what success looks like from the outside and how it feels on the inside. Readers connected with the book’s mix of friendship, family, romance, humor, and stress that felt very current and very lived in.

Allen stayed with Tabby in Black Girls Must Be Magic and Black Girls Must Have It All, opening that story into pregnancy, motherhood, changing friendships, career strain, and the harder question underneath the whole trilogy, what does it really mean to have it all? Across those books, she keeps returning to themes that show up again and again in her work, race, modern relationships, mental and physical health, self-love, and the way women build villages around one another when life gets messy. The trilogy is also being adapted for television.

She has said she writes from life experience and likes characters who feel like real people, not symbols. That shows in the way her protagonists are allowed to be smart, tired, funny, ambitious, hurt, hopeful, and contradictory all at once. Allen is especially interested in centering Black women as full, dynamic people whose inner lives matter just as much as the social issues moving around them.

She writes about pressure, but she leaves room for joy.

That balance carries into The Most Wonderful Time, a holiday novel about a Chicago woman and a Malibu artist who swap homes at Christmas and end up rethinking love, grief, and the futures they thought they wanted. In 2025, Allen also teamed up with Malcolm D. Lee on Unfinished Business, a novel continuation of The Best Man universe that digs into long friendships, old feelings, and second acts. Different setup, same interest in grown people trying to become more honest versions of themselves.

Off the page, Allen has worn a lot of hats. Her official bios describe her as a writer, producer, entrepreneur, former lawyer, and engineer, and she has also spent time helping other writers through Book Genius, workshops, and publishing conversations. She cares about broader representation in books, and that concern sits quietly underneath much of what she writes.

She now lives in Los Angeles. When she is not working, she has said she likes friends and family, travel, laughter, and even a little standup comedy, and she tries to learn one new thing each week. That feels on brand. Her novels look hard truths in the face, but they also make space for wit, warmth, and the possibility that people can change.
