Marshall Brothers Books in Order

The Marshall Brothers books are darker than many of Goodman's family series. Set after the Civil War, they deal with men carrying old damage into a changed country, and with heroines whose danger is not merely romantic but physical, social, and psychological. The books also connect loosely with the later Dennehy Sisters world, which gives them a little extra interest for long-time Goodman readers.

These are rescue stories, but not simple ones.

The first novel, known in later editions as Her Defiant Heart and originally published as Midnight Princess, follows Christian Marshall. A war veteran, he becomes involved in helping a young woman escape from a New York asylum. Jenny Holland reaches Marshall House by accident more than design, and the book gets much of its power from the uneasy refuge they create together.

The second story, Passion's Sweet Revenge / His Heart's Revenge, keeps the emotional temperature high. Here Goodman leans into vengeance, hidden injury, and the idea that love can be both a refuge and a threat when people have spent years protecting the rawest parts of themselves.

What links the brothers is not sameness of personality so much as shared aftermath. These men are living in the long shadow of war, violence, and family obligation. The heroines are not untouched innocents either. Everyone brings some kind of scar to the page.

If you like Goodman best when she turns the intensity up, this is a strong series to try. It is compact, but it has a lot of emotional weight and a clear interest in how damaged people learn to feel safe again.
