The romance feels quieter at first, but the stakes are still high because the heroine's past does not stay buried, and safety becomes part of the love story.

That is probably the series' biggest draw. It has all the cozy machinery of a small-town romance, harvest festivals, nosy locals, scenic work, holiday energy, but it does not stop there. Elliot keeps threading in mystery, threat, and emotional aftershocks from earlier pain. The heroes are protective, but not in a cartoon way. The heroines are often trying to claim space for themselves before they are ready to trust anyone else with it.

A third book, Sugar & Shadows, is slated as an enemies-to-lovers romance, which fits the pattern nicely. Even without full plot details, the title alone sounds like Maplewood distilled down to its essentials: sweetness on one side, trouble on the other. By that point, the series has made it clear that no love story in this town unfolds without some shadow crossing it.

So if you like romance that feels cozy but not weightless, this is a strong fit. The books are connected through town atmosphere and recurring threads, and they will likely land best in order, especially if you want the mystery elements and community dynamics to build naturally from one story to the next.
