Caught in the Axe opens the series with Owen Hebert returning to Lovewell to help clean up the wreckage left behind by his family. He hires Lila Webster as a temporary assistant, which would already be complicated enough, except she is also his younger brother's ex. Between thefts, break-ins, gossip, and late-night work, the book makes it clear that the romantic tension is not the only problem they are dealing with.

Pain in the Axe keeps the emotional stakes high in a different way. It centers on divorced exes who are pulled back together through business, unfinished feelings, and a pregnancy neither one expected. It is a good example of how this series likes to mix classic romance tropes with a town-wide sense of instability.

Then things get even more chaotic.

Axe-identally Married takes a Vegas wedding and turns it into a marriage-of-convenience story between small-town doctor Willa and former hockey player Cole. Axe Backwards brings in single-dad energy through Noah, who comes home suddenly responsible for a baby, and a fake-dating thread that starts as emotional support and slowly becomes something much more solid. Axe-ing For Trouble closes the main run with Jude and Mila in a more openly dangerous setup, with hideouts, pursuit, and a stronger romantic-suspense feel.

What ties all five books together is the Hebert family and the trouble circling Lovewell. The men in these stories are not just handsome lumberjacks. They are dealing with grief, anger, responsibility, bad reputations, and the pressure of trying to become better than the example they were given. The women are rarely passive spectators. They are smart, stubborn, funny, and usually carrying problems of their own.

That gives the series a nice balance. There is still plenty of flannel, physical chemistry, and cozy small-town atmosphere, but the books are more plot-driven than a lot of contemporary romance series. The mystery line matters. The danger matters. Family loyalty matters.

Read these in order if you can, especially if you like connected worlds. Each romance stands alone, but the emotional payoff gets stronger as the larger Lovewell story comes into focus.
