Series background & context

The Maker's Song is a dark urban fantasy series centered on Dante Baptiste and Heather Wallace. Dante is the singer in the rock band Inferno and a figure of rumor in New Orleans, where he is also linked to the nightclub Club Hell. Heather is an FBI special agent whose hunt for a serial killer brings her into Dante's orbit. At first, he looks like a possible suspect. Then the case opens into something much bigger.

Dante is vampire, or nightkind in the language of the series, but that is only the start of the problem. His past is fractured by foster homes, manipulation, trauma, and secrets about what he is. Heather has her own reasons to distrust the people and institutions around her, especially as corruption inside the government becomes harder to ignore.

Their relationship is the emotional center of the books. Heather wants answers and refuses to look away when the danger becomes supernatural. Dante wants to protect her while trying to understand his own history and powers. Neither task stays simple for long.

New Orleans gives the series much of its atmosphere, from music clubs and late-night streets to hidden corners where vampires, nomads, and fallen angels operate by their own rules. The story also moves to Seattle, Oregon, and other locations as Dante's past and the larger conflict widen. The setting matters because it keeps the supernatural world tied to real places, law enforcement pressure, and the practical problem of getting through another night alive.

The ongoing plot builds around Dante's identity as a True Blood and a figure connected to the Fallen. Government agents, vampire power players, and ancient supernatural forces all see him as someone they can control, use, or destroy. Heather and Dante are repeatedly pushed to choose whom they trust, what they will sacrifice, and whether they can keep their future from being decided by other people.

Expect a fast, moody mix of paranormal thriller, romance, conspiracy, and supernatural politics. The books can get intense, with violence, emotional fallout, and a growing cast of allies and enemies. But the main thread remains clear: Dante and Heather fighting to stay themselves and stay together while the world around them keeps raising the stakes.

Start with A Rush of Wings. The books work best in order because each installment expands the history, relationships, and threats already in motion.
