The Master

by Kresley Cole

2015

On the run from her past, Catarina Marín takes an escort job in Miami and lands in the penthouse of Maksimilian Sevastyan, a wealthy, intensely controlled politician with mafiya ties. Their one‑night arrangement explodes into obsession, dragging both into a relationship that tests their limits, vulnerabilities, and ideas of power.

3

The Professional

by Kresley Cole

2014

Grad student Natalie Porter has her quiet life shattered when she learns her birth father is a powerful Russian crime boss and his enforcer has come to collect her. Whisked into a world of palaces, private planes, and dangerous rivals, she and Aleksandr Sevastyan push each other toward a dark, consuming kind of love.

Series background & context

The Game Maker series takes Kresley Cole’s trademark intensity and moves it into the contemporary world. Instead of immortal warriors and curses, you get powerful Russian brothers with criminal pasts, high‑stakes business empires, and complicated ideas about control, loyalty, and love.

At the center of the trilogy are the Sevastyan men, who grew up under brutal circumstances and now inhabit a world of obscene wealth and hidden violence. Each book follows a different brother as he collides with a heroine who refuses to be just another possession.

The Professional introduces Aleksandr “The Siberian” Sevastyan, a mafiya enforcer sent to retrieve his boss’s long‑lost daughter, Natalie. What begins as a grim protection duty turns into a charged, deeply kinky relationship as she is pulled out of her grad‑student life and into a world of palaces, private jets, and dangerous rivals. The story is as much about Natalie claiming her own desires as it is about Aleksandr learning to let someone all the way in.

In The Master, cold, controlled Maksimilian Sevastyan meets Catarina, a runaway wife turned escort who is determined to survive on her own terms. Their one‑night arrangement in Miami spirals quickly into obsession, with Maksim’s political power and criminal ties crashing into Cat’s need for safety and independence. The book balances intense erotic scenes with quieter moments that show both characters wrestling with shame, trust, and the families they left behind.

The Player shifts focus to Dmitri, the most shadowed and emotionally closed of the brothers, and Victoria, a grifter from a family of con artists. Their cat‑and‑mouse game in Las Vegas blurs the line between mark and mastermind. Watching them decide whether to outmaneuver each other or team up for something real provides much of the tension.

Across all three novels you can expect explicit power‑exchange dynamics, glamorous settings, and a strong emphasis on consent and communication as the couples figure out what actually works for them. The books share a loose chronological order and overlapping characters, but each romance stands alone, so you can start with whichever setup appeals most.

If you enjoy Cole’s paranormal work but want something with modern trappings and no fangs, Game Maker offers the same big feelings and found‑family payoff in a slick, dangerous, very human package.
