Series background & context

The Hoodoo series follows Kallie Riviere, a Cajun hoodoo apprentice with real talent, a sharp temper, and a knack for finding trouble. She knows folk magic can help people, protect a home, or change the course of a bad day. She also knows that some magic carries a cost. Kallie keeps learning that lesson the hard way.

The series begins in New Orleans, where Kallie arrives for the Hecatean Alliance's annual carnival and quickly finds herself at the center of a murder. A man is killed in her bed with a black dust hex, a kind of soul-eating dark juju that may have been meant for her. Clearing her name means following the danger back toward Bayou Cypres Noir and confronting people she once trusted.

Family is a major part of the story. Kallie's aunt and mentor, Gabrielle LaRue, is a powerful presence in her life, but protection and control can be hard to tell apart when spells and old secrets are involved. Kallie also has friends, allies, and complicated romantic ties who become part of the danger whenever a new threat appears.

New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are more than backdrops here. The streets, bayous, storms, music, local speech, and spiritual traditions all shape the mood. The books move between city life and more isolated bayou country, where old protections can fail and the past is never quite as buried as people hope.

The magic comes with consequences. In Black Heart Loa, powerful gris gris begins to unravel, making even familiar spells unpredictable as a massive hurricane approaches. Kallie has to figure out who is causing the breakdown before the people she loves are caught in it, while also facing the unsettling possibility that she may be part of the cause.

A companion short story, Caught Forever Between, follows Cass after her partner is shot in their New Orleans tattoo shop. Her search for justice draws her toward a Voodoo mambo and a dangerous fixer. It sits in the same world and offers another look at its risks, magic, and moral gray areas.

This is paranormal fantasy with murder investigations, family conflict, romance, and plenty of uneasy magic. Start with Black Dust Mambo, then continue to Black Heart Loa. Read Caught Forever Between after those books for a side story set in the same world.
