Always Mine

2019

Brooks, a wealthy but sensitive math nerd, returns to Eden, Wyoming, to assess his uncle’s struggling ranch and avoid the boy who once broke his heart. Xavier, fresh out of prison and now the ranch foreman, is that boy grown up. Their reunion is messy, charged, and full of unresolved hurt.

Series background & context

Love in Eden is set in and around Eden, a ranching town in Wyoming that prides itself on being traditional and tight knit. Underneath that surface you will find closeted cowboys, drifters, single parents, and men who have learned to keep their heads down to survive. The series weaves together full length novels and shorter pieces to explore who gets to belong in a place like this.

The core of the series is Always Mine, where Brooks, a wealthy, sensitive math nerd who grew up feeling out of place in Eden, returns to audit his uncle’s struggling horse ranch. He is certain he will never again see Xavier, the rough local boy who once understood him better than anyone and then shattered his trust. But Xavier is back too, fresh out of prison and working as the ranch foreman because it is the only job he could get. Their history is full of betrayal, family drama, and miscommunication, and the book spends time on the slow, painful work of rebuilding something real.

Shorter titles fill in the gaps between bigger stories. Tempting Fate follows Jackson, a divorced ranch hand who appears in the main novel, as he quietly pines for his much younger coworker Travis and impulsively turns to a matchmaking app to explore the side of himself he has always hidden. Choosing Fate shifts focus to Jolene, Jackson’s ex wife and a single mom who has always played by Eden’s rules. A disastrous blind date and a stranger named Zander force her to decide whether it is finally time to put her own wants first.

The Choice plays with anonymous online connection. Hudson, a closeted cattle empire owner, uses a no photos dating app as a low risk way to test what it would mean to live honestly. The man he matches with answers a deceptively simple question about regret in a way that mesmerizes him. When the two agree to meet, Hudson discovers his perfect match is not a stranger at all but the shy ranch hand he has been carefully keeping at arm’s length.

Later in the timeline comes His Cowboy Heart, which takes an outsider’s view of Eden. Jules, a stylish New Yorker, arrives in town and is immediately reminded that small places can be hostile to anyone who doesn’t blend in. A late night attack in a trash strewn alley introduces him to Flynn, a drifting cowboy who is used to staying just long enough to fix a fence or break a horse before moving on. Their story is about learning which parts of themselves they are willing to change, and which they are finally ready to defend.

As in Kennedy’s other series, Love in Eden leans on found family and second chances, but the stakes here often center on community acceptance and self respect rather than guns and covert ops. The tone blends classic cowboy romance elements with contemporary queer issues, making Eden feel both timeless and very current.
