Series background & context

Barretti Security revolves around the extended Barretti family, an Italian American clan with deep roots in both legitimate business and the criminal underworld. The series follows four brothers and the people who become entangled in their lives as they build a high end security and investigations firm.

The story really starts in the background of the Escort books, where Dominic Barretti and his wife Sylvie play key roles, but the first Barretti Security novel, Loving Vin, focuses on Vin, the steady eldest brother. He falls for a woman whose father is a serial killer, and the book uses that high concept hook to dig into questions of legacy, guilt by association, and whether someone from a very dark past can ever feel safe loving or being loved.

Redeeming Rafe shifts to the youngest Barretti brother, Rafe, who survived a childhood trauma that his older brothers could not prevent. As an adult, he hacks into Barretti Security itself, set on destroying the company to get revenge on the siblings he believes abandoned him. Cade, a mercenary who now works for the firm, is tasked with stopping the hacker. What follows is a tense enemies to lovers story threaded with family reconciliation.

In Saving Ren, the brothers’ missing sibling finally returns after a year of torture and captivity at the hands of terrorists. Ren is shattered and ready to disappear, convinced his presence only puts his family at risk. Declan, a police detective tied to the Barrettis through his sister’s marriage, and Jagger, a former soldier looking for a place to belong, both refuse to let him go. The result is an intense poly romance about PTSD, survivor guilt, and the possibility of joy after hell.

Freeing Zane brings in Zane, a high powered defense attorney with a complicated family of his own, and Connor, a cop who has little patience for Zane’s willingness to play in moral gray areas. Their story explores corruption, mob ties, and what it means to choose your own family when the one you were born into has failed you.

Barretti Security crosses over heavily with The Protectors and Finding. Cases and enemies spill between series, and side characters drift from one set of books to another. At its heart, though, this is a saga about a family that refuses to stop trying, even when they hurt one another or make catastrophic choices. If you like romance wrapped in mafia flavor and bodyguard action, this is the corner of Kennedy’s universe that leans into those elements most strongly.
