Series background & context

Lore of King & Slater is a compact series built for readers who want to know how Jason King and Will Slater became the men we meet in the main novels. Instead of pushing their story further into the future, these books turn around and walk back into the years before they ever crossed paths.

Recruited digs into Will Slater’s early life on the streets of Chicago in 2003. At twenty he is already hardened by loss, surviving day to day in Englewood by making uneasy truces with local gangs. He has a strict personal code and does business only when his conscience allows. When he takes a job that triggers old memories, everything he thinks he knows about who he can trust starts to unravel. The choices he makes during that job set him on the road toward the elite covert operator we later see.

Thin Air shifts the focus to Jason King in 2010. Ordered to take a week off between missions, a younger, already battered King is instead sent to a training camp on the slopes of Ojos del Salado, the highest volcano on earth. The altitude is meant to break him down physically and mentally. What looks like brutal conditioning hides a deeper play involving Christian West, a power broker known as the Golden One, who wants King’s entire division dismantled. Fighting through oxygen starvation, betrayal and wave after wave of enemies, King is forced to question who in his world he can actually rely on.

Taken together, these novellas flesh out details that are only hinted at in the longer books. You see Slater before he ever wears a uniform, already wrestling with loyalty and anger. You see King still forming his instincts about when to follow orders and when to defy them.

Lore of King & Slater also introduces pieces of a larger conspiracy that threads through the main series. Figures like the Golden One do not come out of nowhere. Their roots run back through shady training programs, off the books experiments and years of quiet manipulation. These origin stories sketch those roots without spoiling the payoffs readers encounter later.

Because the books are shorter, they move fast and stay tightly focused on a single turning point in each man’s life. They are ideal if you want more depth without committing to another multi hundred page novel, or if you are reading the universe in chronological order and want to understand the foundation before jumping into full scale King & Slater chaos.
