Series background & context

The King & Slater books pick up after years of chaos in Jason King’s life and introduce his unlikely counterpart, Will Slater. Both men are former black ops weapons who have seen too much, done too much and owe too little to the agencies that built them. Together they take all that experience off the books.

At the start of the series, in Weapons, they reunite in New York City and begin a vigilante campaign against the worst kind of predators hiding in plain sight. They go after traffickers, fixers and corrupt officials, using the same skills that once served secret agendas. It is violent, messy work, but for the two of them it feels closer to honest than anything they have done under official orders.

Very quickly, nothing stays simple. In Contracts, a supposedly contained kidnapping rescue in the high Himalayas becomes a brutal fight for survival on thin air. Ciphers drags them into a cyberattack that shuts down New York’s power grid and turns a modern city into a powder keg. These are still contract jobs on paper, but every one pulls on threads that prove to be tangled into something larger.

The middle stretch of the series pushes King and Slater further out onto the edge. They take on corrupt judges and bent cops in Las Vegas, hunt financial sharks in the Bahamas and descend into the heart of a cult fuelling its followers with a mind warping drug in rural Wyoming. Books like Ghosts, Sharks, Messiahs and Hunters show them shifting from hired problem solvers into figures that whole criminal networks fear.

Along the way their world fills with people they care about. Partners, children, friends and old comrades orbit the two men, turning each operation into something more than a faceless mission. That family element comes to the front in Fathers, Tyrants and Monsters, where old sins collide with new responsibilities and the cost of violence lands uncomfortably close to home.

The later novels escalate toward an endgame. Enemies in government, in intelligence circles and in boardrooms converge, all linked to a shadowy figure known only as the Golden One. By Daggers and Heroes, King and Slater are fighting not just for their own survival, but for the chance to finally cut the strings that have been on them since their earliest days in the field.

If you want a long running arc that balances relentless action with loyalty, family, revenge and the question of whether two career killers can ever really change, King & Slater is where the entire universe comes together.
