Series background & context

The King & Slater Jr. series hands the keys to a new generation while staying firmly rooted in the world Jason King and Will Slater built. Instead of starting over in a fresh universe, these books look at what happens when children grow up in the long shadow of legendary vigilantes.

The focus is on Jason King Jr., a nineteen year old raised by two people who spent their early adulthood fighting secret wars. Junior has inherited his parents’ work ethic, physical ability and moral clarity, but he lives in a very different world. He is suspicious of technology, impatient with the aimless drift he sees in his peers and restless in the quiet life his family has carved out.

In The Sons, a serious health scare jolts his father and gives Junior the excuse he has been waiting for to strike out on his own. With his parents’ reluctant blessing he leaves home to see what kind of man he can be away from their protection. Trouble is not hard to find. His first forays into the underworld beneath polite society quickly turn violent, and he discovers that living by his parents’ principles is far harder when he is the one taking the hits.

Tyrell Slater, Will’s son, is never far from the action. Together they form a rough, untested partnership that mirrors and twists the bond between their fathers. Where King and Slater are seasoned operators, the younger pair are still working out where their limits sit, both physically and morally. Their learning curve involves organised crime, local tyrants and people who think they can use the famous surnames for their own ends.

The Sins continues their odyssey, pulling them from cities into more remote, swampy terrain and throwing them up against guerrilla fighters plotting a devastating attack. The books lean into the idea that legacy cuts both ways. The same name that opens doors also paints a target on their backs.

Across the series, Rogers explores themes of inheritance, expectation and the fear of repeating old mistakes. Junior is determined not to become a burnt out ghost like some of the men he grew up around, but he also cannot ignore injustice when it stands in front of him. Tyrell wrestles with similar questions from his own angle.

Readers who have followed King and Slater from their first appearance will recognise echoes of earlier stories, but the tone has its own energy. It is faster, more impulsive, and coloured by the way younger characters think about fame, surveillance and the futures available to them. The King & Slater Jr. books expand the universe without abandoning what made it compelling in the first place.
