Wolf

by Matt Rogers

2017

Series background & context

The Will Slater novels follow a man who knows exactly what he is good at and is painfully aware of what it has cost him. Slater is an ex US black ops assassin, a quiet, physically imposing presence who drifts from one hot spot to another looking for trouble that deserves to be put down.

In Wolf, he heads into war torn Yemen and gets far more than the rough adventure he was chasing. A murdered boy in the Hadhramaut Valley draws him into a plot that stretches from mountain caves to the streets of London, with a single code word tied to a catastrophic terror plan. The book sets the tone for the series: local injustices that turn out to be pieces of something much bigger.

Lion shifts the stage to Macau. Fresh from his government career, Slater sees a young girl kidnapped outside a towering casino complex and reacts on instinct. His rescue plunges him into the world of a billionaire resort owner whose wealth is built on something far darker than gambling. As Slater peels back the layers, his famous self control is tested by what he finds underneath.

Later entries like Bear, Lynx, Bull and Hawk keep the focus on one man up against entire systems. Slater moves through remote backwaters and glossy cities, taking on cartels, paramilitaries and predators who think they are untouchable. The details change, but a few things stay constant: fast moving fights, improvised tactics and a hero who would rather go through a wall than compromise his code.

Compared to Jason King, Slater is quieter on the surface but just as obsessive underneath. Rogers uses him to explore themes of isolation and belonging. Slater knows how quickly people close to him can be used as leverage, yet he still forms connections he has to protect, a tension that feeds straight into the later King & Slater novels.

You can read the Will Slater books on their own as hard hitting globetrotting adventures, or treat them as the foundation for everything that happens once he finally crosses paths with Jason King. Either way, they show you who he was before partnership, family and an entire shared universe complicated his life.
