Series background & context

Lords of Discord is Drake's vampire family series. The Variks are not loners drifting through the night. They are a tight, nosy, overprotective clan, and the books get a lot of mileage out of that. From the start, the family is dealing with enemies who want them broken, a prophecy that threatens everything, and the awkward fact that love keeps arriving right in the middle of the danger.

Marcus opens the series, but the bigger appeal is the whole houseful of Variks. Each brother gets his turn, and the line keeps expanding from there to include mates, allies, wolves, witches, and one memorable raven. The romance in each book is different, but family loyalty is what makes the series feel cohesive.

That loyalty gets tested a lot.

Some books lean into betrayal and revenge. Others bring prophecy, blood ties, or trouble between supernatural groups. One of the smartest things the series does is let the external threat keep building while the family itself keeps growing warmer and louder. By the time later books reach Winter and Aiden, the emotional payoff comes as much from the full clan as from the central couple.

The tone is paranormal romance with real ongoing stakes. There is plenty of heat, but also grief, old wounds, and the sense that immortality has not made any of these people less vulnerable.

If you want vampires with strong family energy, recurring danger, and romances that plug into a much larger supernatural conflict, this is one of Drake's best shared worlds.
