Series background & context
The Godstone Saga is Jocelynn Drake in full fantasy mode. The series begins with Prince Caelan of Erya heading out on what should have been a diplomatic mission and quickly discovering that almost everything he thought he knew about his world is wrong. By the time the story gets moving, he is on the run with the people he trusts most, trying to save a kingdom while gods, enemies, and old lies close in from every side.
Caelan is the center of the series, but he is never carrying it alone. His bond with Drayce gives the books their emotional spine, while the wider group turns the journey into a true found-family story. That matters, because these books are built on movement. New kingdoms, new dangers, new divine bargains, and one problem after another waiting on the road.
The gods are not background decoration.
They are active, demanding, and often manipulative. Waking them, bargaining with them, and surviving their plans drives the larger arc from book to book. At the same time, there is a grounded personal thread running through everything. Caelan wants his throne back, wants answers, and wants to protect the people who have become his family.
The setting keeps widening as the series goes on. You get court politics, secret histories, dragon-linked revelations, hostile cities, broken alliances, and a steady sense that the fate of the world is being decided one desperate trip at a time. Even with that scale, the books stay close to character.
If you want fantasy that mixes princes, gods, romance, travel, and a long continuing quest, this is one of Drake's most immersive series.
