Author bio
Lois Greiman grew up on a cattle ranch in central North Dakota, where wide skies, hard weather, and horse country were just part of daily life. She later graduated from a high school class of sixty, then headed to Minnesota, which turned out to be the next big stop in a very non-straight-line road to writing.
Before novels paid the bills, she trained and showed Arabian horses professionally. She also worked as a high fashion model, a fitness instructor, and a veterinary assistant. It is a wonderfully eclectic resume, and it helps explain why her books can feel both glamorous and down-to-earth at the same time.
Writing was the thread that kept pulling at her.
Greiman sold her first novel in 1992, and her early books leaned into historical romance, especially stories set in medieval Scotland. Titles like Highland Jewel, Highland Flame, and The Fraser Bride show how much she enjoyed clan politics, fierce heroines, and the push and pull between danger and desire. A lot of readers came to her through those Highland books, especially the ones tied to the Forbes clan and the later MacGowan stories.
Then she pivoted, and that turn became a big part of her appeal. In the Chrissy McMullen mysteries, starting with Unzipped, she brought the same romantic energy into contemporary crime fiction, only now the setting was Los Angeles, the heroine was a therapist with a chaotic personal life, and the tone was sharper, funnier, and more openly screwball. Books like Unscrewed, Not One Clue, and Unhinged show how comfortable she is mixing murder, attraction, and comedy without losing the plot.
She did not stay in one lane for long.
Greiman has also written small-town and women's fiction, including the Hope Springs and Home in the Hills books, where ranch life, family strain, and second chances matter as much as romance. That range is part of what keeps her bibliography interesting. One shelf gives you Highland warriors. Another gives you Hollywood-adjacent mystery. Another gives you South Dakota horses, lambs, and people trying to put their lives back together.
Her success is not hard to measure in plain terms. She sold her first book early in the 1990s, has published more than forty titles, has had more than two million books printed worldwide, and has been a two-time RITA finalist. She has also picked up honors including RT Book Reviews Storyteller of the Year, RT's Love and Laughter, and Midwest Fiction Writers' Rising Star.
These days she lives in Minnesota and has stayed closely involved with horse training and animal rescue. That feels very on-brand. Even when the genre changes, her books tend to circle back to capable women, lively banter, messy loyalties, and people, human or animal, who need a safe place to land.
