Series background & context

Chrissy McMullen is the kind of sleuth who seems to trip over trouble even when she's honestly trying to help people. At the start of the series, she has just made a big career jump, leaving behind her old Chicago nightclub life and opening a psychotherapy practice in Los Angeles. She wants to be taken seriously. The problem is that murder, bad clients, and family chaos keep barging through the door.

That gives the books their spark.

Chrissy is smart, impulsive, funny, and rarely as cautious as she should be. She thinks fast, talks faster, and has a habit of digging into crimes the police would very much like her to leave alone. On the law-enforcement side is Jack Rivera, an LAPD homicide detective who is competent, skeptical, and far too attractive for anyone's peace of mind. Their relationship is one of the main engines of the series. Some books lean more into the case, some into the romance, but the push and pull between Chrissy and Rivera runs through all of them.

The supporting cast matters too. Chrissy's loud, loving, exhausting family keeps raising the temperature, and her circle includes clients, friends, and Hollywood-adjacent personalities who bring extra drama into the mix. That means the mysteries can start almost anywhere, at a therapy office, a celebrity party, a family disaster, or a bad date that turns into a homicide scene.

Tonally, these are comic mysteries with a romantic suspense streak. The crimes are real, but the books are never grim for long. Greiman likes wisecracks, misunderstandings, sexual tension, and scenes where Chrissy's good intentions make everything much worse before they make anything better.

If you want a polished, methodical detective, this is probably not your lane. If you want a smart, messy heroine, a strong will-they-won't-they romance, and mysteries that move fast without taking themselves too seriously, Chrissy McMullen is a very fun place to start.
