Author bio
Linda Castillo grew up in rural western Ohio, in small farm towns where cornfields met two lane roads and Amish buggies were a normal sight. She knew early that she wanted to write, and at thirteen she filled a spiral notebook with a novel about twin girls who run away on their Appaloosa horses. Years later she found that notebook among her father’s things, complete with her smudged handprint on the cover.
Writing did not become her full time job overnight. After community college she worked a string of jobs and eventually moved to Texas, taking a corporate position with a pizza chain in Dallas. For more than a decade she managed franchise accounts by day and wrote in the margins of her life, getting up before dawn, writing again on her lunch break, and often returning to the pages late at night.
Her persistence paid off when she sold her first romantic suspense novel, Remember the Night, which went on to earn a prestigious award nomination. Dozens of category romances and single title thrillers followed. In books like A Hero to Hold, Just a Little Bit Dangerous, The Perfect Victim and A Whisper in the Dark, she blended danger, family loyalty and slow burn attraction, often setting the stories in small towns or remote country where help is a long way off.
The turning point came when she decided to write a bigger, darker thriller rooted in the Amish country she had known from childhood. A research trip to Ohio’s Amish communities gave her the spark for Kate Burkholder, a former Amish woman who returns to her hometown as chief of police. The first book, Sworn to Silence, appeared in 2009, introduced the fictional town of Painters Mill, and quickly landed on bestseller lists. It was later adapted into the television movie An Amish Murder with Neve Campbell playing Kate.
The Kate Burkholder series has grown into a long running line of crime novels and short stories, including Pray for Silence, Gone Missing, Among the Wicked, The Hidden One, An Evil Heart, The Burning and Rage. The books weave together gritty investigations with an intimate look at Amish life, asking what happens when a tight knit, tradition bound community collides with very modern violence. Kate’s own history in the Plain world, and her complicated relationship with state agent John Tomasetti, give the series its emotional backbone.
Along the way, Castillo’s work has been recognized with industry honors. She has received the Daphne du Maurier Award and the Holt Medallion, and has been nominated for prizes ranging from the RITA to the Sue Grafton Memorial Award. Her short fiction has drawn notice as well, with the Kate Burkholder story Hallowed Ground winning a major mystery award for best short story.
Today she lives on a ranch in Texas with her husband, a few Appaloosa horses and a pack of energetic dogs, including loyal Blue Heelers. When she is not at her desk she likes to be in the saddle, trail riding or dabbling in barrel racing, and those long hours with horses often find their way into her books.
Castillo keeps a steady, workmanlike writing routine and still talks about story ideas in simple, practical terms. Many of them start with a place, a crime and a question about what people will do when pushed to the edge. As long as she has new puzzles for Kate Burkholder to solve, and new corners of Amish country to explore, she keeps returning to the page.
