Series background & context
The Kate Burkholder books follow the life and work of Kate, a former Amish girl who returns to her hometown as chief of police. The series is set in Painters Mill, a small Ohio town surrounded by farms, cornfields and conservative church districts, where the Amish and the English live side by side.
When the series opens in Sworn to Silence, Kate has already left the Amish faith, survived a traumatic attack as a teenager and spent years in big city law enforcement. She comes back to Painters Mill carrying scars, secrets and a fierce sense of duty. Her background makes her an outsider to the Plain community, yet she speaks Pennsylvania Dutch, understands the Ordnung and can walk into homes and barns other cops would never see.
Each novel takes a different crime and asks how it would play out in a world shaped by non violence, forgiveness and a deep suspicion of outside authority. Kate investigates serial killings that echo an old horror from her youth, family massacres on isolated farms, missing teenagers on rumspringa and cold cases uncovered by tornadoes, fires or chance discoveries. Ordinary Amish settings, from schoolhouses to hay fields, become crime scenes when violence intrudes.
Alongside the cases, the books track Kate’s personal life. Her romance with state agent John Tomasetti grows from wary partnership into hard won trust, complicated by his own losses and their shared history with addiction and grief. Her small department in Painters Mill, a handful of officers with distinct strengths and tempers, becomes a kind of found family that backs her up when both Amish and English neighbors would rather she kept quiet.
One of the pleasures of the series is the way Castillo lets readers see both sides of the cultural divide. Kate is blunt about the flaws she sees in the community that raised her, especially when secrecy protects abusers or allows prejudice to fester. At the same time she understands the comfort of faith, the appeal of a slower life and the weight of turning your back on everything you once believed.
In addition to the full length novels, a run of novellas and short stories such as Long Lost, A Hidden Secret, Seeds of Deception and Only the Lucky fill in the gaps between books. Some glimpse Kate as a teen girl still living Amish. Others drop in on smaller cases in Painters Mill, showing quiet moments with John Tomasetti or the department while still delivering tight, suspenseful mysteries.
Across the series, readers can expect grounded police work, moody Midwestern weather and crimes that are less about sensational twists than about the painful choices people make when loyalty, faith and fear collide.
