Series background & context

The High Country Heroes novels are romantic suspense stories set in the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Instead of detectives in a city, these books focus on men who work in rescue and law enforcement roles in high, unforgiving country, where a bad decision can be as deadly as any villain.

In A Hero to Hold, flight medic John Maitland responds to a call in the mountains and finds a woman clinging to life on a narrow ledge. She is bruised, pregnant and suffering from amnesia, with no idea who she is or who pushed her off the road. John brings her down out of the snow and into his care, determined to keep an emotional distance even as attacks continue and the mystery around “Hannah” grows more frightening.

Just A Little Bit Dangerous follows Colorado deputy sheriff Jake Madigan, sent into the backcountry to pick up escapee Abby Nichols before a blizzard hits. Abby insists she was framed, and the simple retrieval turns into a running gunfight through steep canyons, whiteout conditions and long buried secrets from her past. As they work together to stay ahead of hired killers, Jake’s by the book habits clash with his growing belief in her innocence.

In A Cry in the Night, search and rescue leader Buzz Malone is dragged back into the life of his ex wife, Kelly, when their young son disappears in the Rockies. A forest fire, treacherous terrain and an approaching storm turn the hunt into a race against time. The book blends the nuts and bolts of a mountain search with the raw emotions of two people who never truly stopped loving each other.

Each novel stands alone, with a self contained romance and central mystery, but the books share cameos, recurring agencies and the same high country backdrop. The tone is intimate and intense rather than sprawling, focusing on a small cast of characters in extreme situations where trust becomes a survival tool.

Readers who like their romantic suspense filled with snowstorms, rescue helicopters, remote cabins and characters who know how to tie a proper rope knot will feel at home here. The series leans into the idea that heroism is as much about patience and grit as it is about action, and that sometimes the hardest climb is back toward love after everything has gone wrong.
