Series background & context

Lights Out is a shared world miniseries built around one terrifying premise: a coordinated attack plunges Boston into darkness. Power fails, communications falter and in the space of a few minutes a modern city slips into a dangerous, unfamiliar night. Different authors follow different characters through that blackout; Linda Castillo’s contribution focuses on a daredevil operative and the woman he never stopped loving.

Her story first appeared as A Baby Before Dawn and was later reissued as Safe Before Dawn. Chase Vickers has spent his career moving from one secret mission to the next, taking risks most people cannot imagine. Fear is not something he is used to feeling. That changes when the grid goes down, the streets erupt in chaos and he discovers that Lily Garrett, the woman he walked away from months ago, has become the target of a revenge plot.

Lily has built a life far from Chase’s world of covert operations and classified briefings. She is stubbornly independent and has good reason to resent the danger that follows him. The blackout traps her in a city where elevators stop, hospitals struggle and the usual safety nets vanish. When Chase finds her, he also discovers she is pregnant, and suddenly the stakes are no longer abstract.

Over the course of one long, harrowing night, they move through blacked out neighborhoods, deserted alleys and uneasy pockets of community, trying to stay ahead of the people who want Lily dead. The story balances the ticking clock of survival with the quieter reckoning between two people who never really finished what began between them.

As a Lights Out book, Castillo’s entry leans into claustrophobic urban suspense rather than the rural settings of her Amish thrillers. Fans of her work will still recognize the focus on character, the stubborn courage of ordinary people under pressure and the way love becomes both a vulnerability and a source of strength when everything else has been stripped away.
