Author bio

Linda Byler grew up in an Old Order Amish family in central Pennsylvania, where chores, church, and horses shaped the rhythm of every day. She finished school after eighth grade, as is typical in her community, then moved straight into farm work, housework, and helping raise a family.

Writing started as a small side job. Linda began sending in a regular column for a weekly Amish newspaper, sharing stories about children, weather, barn work, and the small frictions that make up close family life. Her pieces were honest and funny, and other Amish readers began to look for her byline even though she wrote without much fuss about herself.

Over time, those short columns turned into longer stories. Linda began writing fiction by hand in lined notebooks, inventing characters who felt a lot like the people she knew in real life. Her early Lizzie books were first passed around inside the Amish community before they were picked up by a mainstream publisher and introduced to readers far beyond Pennsylvania.

Many readers first meet her work through the Lizzie Searches for Love trilogy, which grows out of her own experiences as a spirited Amish girl who loved fast horses more than housework. Other series, like Lancaster Burning and Sadie's Montana, widen the lens, showing barn fires that rattle a peaceful district, wild horses on a Montana ranch, and families trying to stay steady when the ground shifts under their feet.

Linda also writes historical stories, including the Dakota series about an Amish family homesteading in North Dakota during the Great Depression and Hester's Hunt for Home, which follows a Native American girl raised by an Amish couple in colonial Pennsylvania. The Long Road Home trilogy moves south and tackles harder subjects like racism, abuse, and the cost of silence in a tight knit religious community.

Alongside the series, there are standalone novels and Christmas romances such as The Christmas Visitor, Little Amish Matchmaker, A Dog for Christmas, A Horse for Elsie, A Second Chance, Hope Deferred, Love in Unlikely Places, Love Conquers All, Christmas Every Day, Honoring Christmas, and Christmas in Wisconsin. These books often center on widows, older singles, and big families where there is never enough space at the table but somehow room is found anyway.

Her stories pay close attention to ordinary work, from milking cows to baking pies, yet they do not avoid hard things. Characters live with depression, chronic illness, doubt, and anger. Barns burn, marriages strain, and some people walk away from the church while others cling more tightly to it. Through all of this, Linda keeps the tone grounded, trusting that faith, if it is real, has to hold up in the middle of exhaustion and grief.

Today, Linda still writes her novels by hand in notebooks at home, then passes the pages along to be typed. She remains an active member of the Amish church and continues to contribute to a weekly Amish newspaper. She and her husband, Gideon, live in Pennsylvania, not far from the farms where she grew up, surrounded by their children and grandchildren. To her neighbors she is first a wife, mother, and grandmother who happens to write, not a celebrity, and she seems content to keep it that way.
