2011
After moving from Ohio to a small Montana Amish settlement, Sadie Miller works at Aspen East Ranch amid stunning scenery and unpredictable guests. Courted by solid Ezra yet fascinated by English horseman Mark, she faces family turmoil, dangerous wild horse accidents, and the ache of not knowing where she fits.
Series background & context
Sadie’s Montana moves the plain dresses and buggies of Amish life into the wide open spaces of the American West. When Sadie Miller’s family leaves Ohio for a small Amish settlement near a Montana guest ranch, she finds herself surrounded by mountains, wild horses, and more trouble than she expected.
In Wild Horses, Sadie is still adjusting to life at Aspen East Ranch. She loves the horses and the big skies, but she misses the stability of the community she left behind. Two very different young men complicate things further. Ezra, a hardworking Amish neighbor, clearly intends to marry her. Mark, an English horse handler with a complicated past, draws her in a way she does not quite trust.
The ranch itself is a character in the story. Long days, unpredictable guests, and the constant care of horses leave everyone exhausted, and an accident involving wild horses forces Sadie to face just how fragile life can be. At the same time, her own family is fraying. Her mother struggles with mental health, and her father refuses to admit how serious it is, leaving Sadie feeling responsible for far more than any young woman should carry.
Keeping Secrets raises the stakes. Instead of theft, someone is now shooting horses from a distance, targeting both ranch animals and Amish buggy horses. Sadie’s heart remains tangled over Mark, even as friends warn her away. When Daniel, a steady visitor from Lancaster County, appears with kind eyes and a gentle manner, yet another layer of choice and confusion is added to her already crowded life.
By the final book, The Disappearances, Sadie is married but not necessarily settled. The FBI shows up at the farmhouse with questions about two mysterious children who once appeared at the ranch. Mark’s dark moods and secrets leave her worried and worn out. When she herself is taken at gunpoint, family members and law enforcement scramble to find her, and even younger siblings are drawn into dangerous emotional territory.
Through all three books, horses are more than background. They mirror the characters’ fears and freedom, from Sadie’s beloved paint horse to the valuable animals that put her and Mark at risk. Themes of mental illness, marriage, trust, and the limits of obedience weave through the series, set against snowy ridges and dusty corrals.
Readers who enjoy a blend of Western flavor and Amish faith will find Sadie’s Montana both gripping and emotionally rich. The tone is more intense than a cozy romance but still anchored in family prayer, church gatherings, and the quiet hope that God has not abandoned this far flung little community.
