Series background & context
The Buggy Spoke series steps back in time to tell the story of Lizzie Glick’s childhood and early teen years. Aimed at younger readers but enjoyable for adults too, these books show how a lively little girl in Lancaster County becomes the young woman readers meet later in Lizzie Searches for Love.
In Little Amish Lizzie, Lizzie is five years old and very aware that she is not as pious as her older sister Emma. She daydreams when she should be praying, dreads certain chores, and often finds herself in trouble without quite meaning to be. Through her eyes, we see a loving but busy Amish household, complete with bubbling creeks, favorite climbing trees, and a father whose business worries are never far away.
Lizzie and Emma deepens the bond and rivalry between the two sisters. As money grows tight and the family faces the possibility of moving, Lizzie and Emma swing between snapping at each other and pulling together. They begin to understand that their parents carry heavy burdens, and that being the “good” sister or the “wild” one does not shield anyone from grief or change.
Lizzie's Carefree Years and the related Buggy Spoke titles follow Lizzie through school days, buggy accidents, friendships, crushes, and the first serious questions about her faith. She bumps up against rules she does not always agree with, wonders why God made her so hot tempered, and slowly learns that her spirited nature can be a gift as well as a trouble spot.
These books are written with a lighter touch than some of Linda Byler’s adult series. There is plenty of humor in Lizzie’s misadventures, as well as cozy descriptions of meals, sewing, games, and sibling pranks. At the same time, real worries appear: financial strain, community tragedies, and the confusion of growing up in a world where everyone seems to have strong opinions about who you should be.
For readers already familiar with the older Lizzie, Buggy Spoke feels like getting to look through a cherished family photo album. For younger readers, it offers an engaging entry point into Amish fiction, with a heroine who is honest enough to admit she does not always love chores or behave perfectly. The series pairs especially well with the later Lizzie books for anyone who wants to trace her journey from spunky five year old to a woman making some of the biggest decisions of her life.
