Series background & context

The Lieutenant Harrington books move the action to Miami and put homicide lieutenant Nash Harrington at the center. These are police procedurals first, with murder scenes, interviews, pressure from the clock, and a steady sense that every answer opens two more questions. If Carl Kane feels tied to Tampa, Nash Harrington belongs to a different part of Florida altogether, brighter on the surface and just as violent underneath.

Miami matters here.

Early books like Wrath, Beset, and Vestige establish the pattern. A case can begin with something that looks almost ordinary for homicide, infidelity, a tourist murder, a body found where it should not be, and then widen into something uglier and harder to contain. Reinhard likes to let Nash and his team tug on one loose thread until the whole thing starts coming apart.

The setting does a lot of work. Beaches, hotels, boat docks, celebrity orbit, late-night traffic, and media attention all feed the tension. Miami in these books is not postcard Miami. It is a working city where violence can break out in a quiet home, on a crowded street, or at a party full of people who thought they were safe because other people were watching.

Nash himself is written as a steady hand rather than a showboat. He is experienced, practical, and used to ugly scenes, but the series works because the job still gets under his skin. Several books push the danger straight toward his off-duty life, and later entries turn him from investigator into target. That shift gives the series a little more momentum as it goes on, especially in books like Desolation, Reticent, and Culpable.

The pace is the hook.

These are fast, direct books, heavy on investigation and chase, light on fluff. Even when the killer's identity is close at hand, the tension comes from whether Harrington can catch up before the next body drops. If you want a Miami-set crime series with standalone cases, recurring team dynamics, and a lead who keeps getting dragged from routine work into something much worse, this is a strong place to start. Reading in order is worth it, because books like Discontent, Covetous, Iniquity, and Insatiable build on the pressure already stacked on Nash's shoulders.
