Author bio

E H Reinhard was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and later made his way to Tampa, Florida. He writes crime fiction and police procedurals, and that move south ended up shaping his fiction in a very practical way. The streets, water, heat, and working rhythm of Florida law enforcement show up again and again in his books.

Tampa did not just become home, it became part of the job.

Before he was publishing novels, Reinhard worked in sales for much of his adult life. Other jobs along the way included retail management, the auto industry, running a small business, and building viral humor websites that pulled in huge traffic. It is not the usual path into crime fiction, which may be part of why his books feel less polished for show and more built to move.

After that online stretch wound down, he freelanced in blogging and content writing. Then he pushed himself toward something harder and more personal, fiction. As a longtime reader of mysteries, thrillers, and crime novels, he started sketching out a series about a homicide lieutenant. The first plan placed those books in Milwaukee, but Reinhard's own relocation to the Tampa Bay area changed the setting, and Carl Kane moved with him.

That decision gave him the foundation for the Kane books, beginning with Malevolent and continuing through Requite, Determinant, and later the prequel line that starts with The First Shot. Readers who click with Reinhard usually mention the same things. The pacing is quick, the chapters are easy to tear through, and the cases tend to get uglier and more personal the longer they run.

He likes investigators who keep going when common sense says step back.

From there he widened the world instead of repeating himself. Hank Rawlings, first introduced in the Kane universe, becomes the lead in Drained, Consumed, and Judged, where the action shifts from one city desk to FBI cases that jump from Chicago to Tennessee, Miami, Louisville, and Texas. Later, Nash Harrington takes over in Miami-set books like Wrath, Vestige, and Covetous, bringing the same fast procedural engine to a new city and a new lead.

Across all of these series, Reinhard returns to a few things on purpose: homicide work under pressure, killers who want attention, copycats, old cases that refuse to stay buried, and investigators whose private lives do not stay separate from the job for long. The books are dark, but the writing stays plain and direct. He does not linger when the chase can keep moving.

He has also published the Brad Braun novels under the name Erik Racker. Today he lives in Tampa, and when he is not at the keyboard, fishing and the outdoors are still a big part of the picture. That off-the-clock detail fits. His books may be full of dead ends and bad people, but they are written by someone who clearly likes fresh air.
