Series background & context
The On The Hunt books are the later Hank Rawlings run, and some readers treat them as the next phase of the main FBI series rather than a separate thing. Either way, the setup is clear. Hank is no longer the new guy learning the bureau. By the time Adamant begins, he is already a seasoned serial-killer hunter, and the books lean even harder into pursuit.
These stories are built around the chase.
Each entry drops Hank into a moving, dangerous problem. Adamant sends him after an escaped killer cutting across Louisiana and Texas. Reprisal turns the threat back toward the bureau when murdered agents point to a personal vendetta. Palliate brings back a methodical predator Hank has failed to stop before. Reorient opens with bodies in a shallow grave and a possible link to a suspect who should already be locked away. Later books like Avarice and Barbarity keep the same pressure on, with organized violence, thin leads, and killers who do not plan on surrendering.
That shift matters. The original Hank books are about a former city cop settling into federal work. This branch is about what happens after that learning curve is over. Hank knows the drill now. He and his team move faster, the stakes often hit closer to home, and more than one case turns the investigators into targets. That gives the whole run a harder edge.
Reinhard also uses the wider FBI framework well here. The cases stretch through Texas, the Midwest, Kansas City, Miami, Mississippi, and wherever the next bad lead points. The books still have procedural bones, but the energy is closer to a manhunt thriller. Somebody is loose, somebody is already dead, and Hank is trying to close the gap before the trail goes cold again.
If you are new to Hank Rawlings and want the fullest picture, start with Drained and read forward. If you already know the character and want the later, more chase-driven phase, Adamant is the clean handoff point. From there the series lives up to the name. The hunt is the story.
