Author bio
Anna Harrington writes Regency romance, but not the quiet sort that stays politely in drawing rooms. Her books like Dukes Are Forever, If the Duke Demands, An Inconvenient Duke, and The Duke and the Darkness mix glittering London seasons with spies, family trouble, revenge plots, and people carrying old wounds they can no longer ignore.
She has said that her love of historical romance really took hold while she was living in England. There she studied literature and theatre, read Jane Austen, spent time with the Romantic poets, and wandered through the English countryside. You can feel that background all through her fiction, in the country houses, gardens, roads, inns, and long memories that shape her stories.
She clearly loves the rules and rituals of the Regency period. Just as clearly, she loves giving her characters reasons to bend those rules. A Harrington heroine might be secretly working as an architect, running a rescue network for abused women, posing as a boy in a tavern, or refusing to let a title decide the shape of her life.
That tension is the fun.
Her first major series, The Secret Life of Scoundrels, introduced veterans and rakes trying to make their way home from war and back into ordinary life, if such a thing is even possible. In Capturing the Carlisles, she widened the world with one very chaotic family and a string of heroines who are every bit as stubborn as the men chasing them. By the time readers reach After the Spy Seduces, the romance is still front and center, but the suspense is right there beside it.
She likes movement, and her books rarely sit still for long.
That restless energy shows up again in Lords of the Armory, where former soldiers turned lords are drawn into a larger conspiracy threatening England itself. Those books lean harder into romantic suspense, with secret societies, blackmail, riots, hidden identities, and danger pressing in from all sides. Then The Dukes of Darkness turns moodier, following former mercenaries who become dukes and discover that new titles do not erase old sins, grief, or unfinished business.
Readers who come to Harrington for the romance usually stay for the women. Her heroines are practical, brave, funny, and often underestimated. Her heroes may be dukes, earls, spies, or soldiers, but they are usually at their most interesting when a woman sees past the title and refuses to be managed. Again and again, her stories come back to duty versus desire, reputation versus truth, and the hard work of choosing love anyway.
She also has a lighter side.
Shorter works like Dear Duke, One Enchanted Evening, and Twice Upon a Midnight show how flexible her storytelling can be. One turns anonymous notes into a warm, funny courtship. Another builds a tender romance around a grieving mother and child. Another plays with a Cinderella shape while keeping its feet firmly planted in Regency society, class, and family pressure.
Off the page, Harrington sounds like someone who would rather collect experiences than sit still. She has written about traveling widely, volunteering with children's organizations in Peru, Ecuador, Thailand, and Mexico, hiking in Alaska, the Andes, and the Alps, earning a pilot's license at Chicago Midway, and dreaming of one day flying in a hot-air balloon over Africa. At home, she gardens, ballroom dances, drinks a lot of coffee, loves chocolate and ice cream, and jokes that her oven is mostly useful for shoe storage.
