Series background & context

La Famiglia di Mostri moves D.R. Perry's paranormal world into darker territory, where organized crime and monstrous power are tangled together on the streets of Fall River. The series begins with A Change in Crime and follows people caught between revenge, loyalty, survival, and the fear of becoming what they hate.

Leo Riley loses everything in a single violent night when hitmen connected to Giacomo Bianco destroy his home and kill his family. Grief gives Leo one clear purpose: stop Bianco before more people are hurt. But revenge is not a clean road, and the power Leo needs may demand more of him than he is prepared to give.

Oguina offers a path to that power. She is a mythic figure who has become something monstrous, and her presence makes every choice more dangerous. Leo wants justice, but he has to ask whether the tools he uses will pull him toward the same cruelty he is trying to fight.

Bianco is not simply a crime boss with ordinary muscle behind him. He is drawn toward a power that could make his control absolute, and his descent creates a threat that reaches beyond one family or one neighborhood. The series pits supernatural monsters and mafiosi against one another, while leaving room for the uncomfortable possibility that either side can justify terrible acts.

Revenge has a price.

The Fall River setting gives the books a more adult, crime-driven mood than Perry's school series. There are dangerous alliances, old grudges, criminal networks, and supernatural forces that do not follow human rules. The tension comes from both the outside conflict and the moral strain on characters who must decide what they can live with after the fighting is done.

Wiser Guys continues the conflict and expands the consequences of the choices made in the first book. Readers should begin with A Change in Crime, since Leo's loss, Bianco's rise, and the series' central power struggle are established there. The story is best approached as a connected arc rather than as separate crime cases.

La Famiglia di Mostri is for readers who want paranormal fantasy with sharper edges. It still values relationships and loyalty, but it asks harder questions about vengeance, power, and whether a person can fight a monster without feeding the monster inside themselves.
