Series background & context
Hawthorn Academy takes place in D.R. Perry's Revealed World, where magic is real and a young person's school choice can shape an entire future. The series follows Aliyah Morgenstern as she starts at Hawthorn, a school for magi located on a campus between worlds.
Aliyah wants to learn, make friends, and eventually work with magical animals. She has already bonded with Ember, a dragonet familiar, which means other people expect her to have unusual power someday. That attention is not always welcome. Aliyah would rather be known for who she is than for what people assume about her family or her potential.
Starting over is hard. Aliyah leaves behind the familiar comforts of Salem and arrives at a school where her snarky older brother is the only person she knows. Hawthorn brings together students with different talents, different family histories, and very different ideas about what magic should mean. First impressions matter, and a bad one can stick.
The early books, beginning with Familiar Strangers, introduce Aliyah's classmates and the social knots that come with a new school. Her circle includes students who are kind, guarded, ambitious, frightened, or carrying their own secrets. Their magical familiars are not just pets or accessories. They are partners, and those bonds are part of how the students understand themselves.
Hawthorn has problems beneath its orderly surface.
Aliyah's family history is a source of rumor and suspicion, especially because of her connection to an infamous criminal relative. She has to decide how to respond when people expect her to be dangerous. The series uses that pressure to explore trust, prejudice, accountability, and the gap between what a person inherits and what they choose.
The action grows across the books as Aliyah and her friends learn more about the school, their abilities, and threats facing the people around them. The tone is lower young adult fantasy, with magical lessons, familiar creatures, friendship drama, and moments of danger. It shares a world with the earlier Providence Paranormal College books, but it gives younger characters their own story.
The nine installments build one after another, so begin with Familiar Strangers. Readers can expect a school story where magic is important, but courage often looks like offering help, asking a hard question, or refusing to let someone else define your future.
