Gallows Hill Academy follows Mavis Merlini through three turbulent years at a magical high school near Salem, Massachusetts. Mavis is a raven shifter who has spent much of her life surrounded by family chaos. When the series begins, she has one clear goal: graduate, make better choices than the people who came before her, and find a future that belongs to her.

That would be challenging enough without being pushed out by her mother on the eve of her first day of school.

Gallows Hill is home to students with a wide range of supernatural abilities. There are shifters, psychics, mediums, magical beings, and students whose families come with long histories of power and conflict. Mavis is drawn to ghosts, and her connection with them becomes important as she tries to understand both the school and the dangers gathering around her.

Her first real ally is Ed, a young medium she helps when other students target him. More friends follow, though the group has to earn its trust the hard way. Some students are dealing with cruel relatives, painful losses, social exclusion, or the worry that their powers will make them feared. The friendships that grow among them are the heart of the series.

The nine main books are organized around Mavis's three school years. Night Of Sorrow, Chance At Joy, and About a Girl form the first year. About A Boy, Wrapped in Silver, and Striking Gold continue the story in year two. Untold Wish, Secret Kiss, and Joyous Bliss bring the final year to a close. The omnibus editions collect those arcs as Sorrow and Joy, Silver and Gold, and Secrets All Unfold.

There is always another complication.
