Knights of Liofwende Books in Order

The Knights of Liofwende books are portal fantasies for younger readers. They begin when Jack stumbles into Faerieland, a place that resembles the ordinary world only in the loosest sense. It has trolls, goblins, ogres, giants, magic, and rules that are not always explained before they become dangerous.

Jack is not an expert adventurer. He wants to understand what is happening, stay alive, and find a way home. Instead, he gets caught up in troubles that are much larger than the accident that brought him across the boundary.

Faerieland is not a safe fairy tale.

In Spiggot's Quest, Jack needs allies quickly, though the person who comes closest is Spiggot, a dreamy young boggart who is not exactly the dependable wizard Jack had in mind. Their uneasy partnership gives the series much of its humor. Jack must learn how to navigate creatures whose motives, customs, and magic do not line up with anything he knows.

The story grows across Mallmoc's Castle and Boggart and Fen. Jack faces giants and escapes new threats, while the larger conflict in Faerieland develops. By the final book, Mallmoc's huge iron land-ship is causing destruction, and the fate of the land becomes harder to separate from Jack's own effort to survive and make choices that matter.

The books have the pace of a quest, with escapes, strange companions, dangerous journeys, and plenty of creatures that are more complicated than they first appear. Underneath the action, they are about trust. Jack has to decide who to believe when almost everyone seems to know more about the world than he does.
