Red Pavillions Books in Order

The Red Pavilions is a fantasy trilogy written by Garry Douglas Kilworth under the name Kim Hunter. It follows a wounded man who wakes alone on a hillside with almost no memory of who he is. He remembers a huge battle, yet the people around him say no battle has taken place there for more than a century.

He calls himself Soldier because it is the one identity that still feels usable. Hungry, injured, and without a past to hold onto, he makes his way to Zamerkand, a great city with its own dangers, factions, and old resentments. Safety seems possible only when he joins the mercenary army known as the Red Pavilions.

That is where the real trouble starts.

In Knight's Dawn, Soldier's search for his identity runs alongside a wider story of ambition, war, magic, and rivalry. He is not handed answers. Instead, he has to build alliances, learn how Zamerkand works, and decide whether the fragments of his past are worth chasing.

Wizard's Funeral moves deeper into the unsettled kingdom of Zamerkand, where threats inside the borders can be as serious as enemies outside them. The Red Pavilions are soldiers for hire, but their work keeps drawing them into questions of power and succession. By Scabbard's Song, the city is controlled by the usurper Humbold, its rightful young heir is in hiding, and Soldier commands the mercenary force outside the walls.

The trilogy's ongoing tension comes from Soldier's missing past and the kingdom's uncertain future. When his sword and scabbard are reunited, the weapon begins to reveal a history shaped by murder, betrayal, and an old enemy that has not gone away. It is a series of battles and magical threats, but it stays close to a man trying to discover what kind of person he was, and what kind he can become.
