Ensign Early Books in Order

The Ensign Early books are historical mysteries set during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Their central figure is Ensign Sebastian Early of the 24th Foot, a young British officer serving in South Africa. Early would rather be doing the straightforward work of a soldier, but circumstances make him a provost marshal, the army's investigator and police officer.

That job puts him in an awkward position. He has to ask questions when other people would prefer silence, and he has to follow evidence through a military world built on rank, duty, and secrecy. In Scarlet Sash, the apparent suicide of an officer does not add up. The investigation carries Seb through Lord Chelmsford's campaign and toward the battles at Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift.

The war is never just scenery here.

Kilworth uses the setting to give each mystery real pressure. Orders can be dangerous, information travels badly, and everyone is trying to protect a reputation or stay alive. The books include military action, but their engine is the investigation: a suspicious death, a missing detail, or the question of who benefits from a lie.

Dragoons continues with Seb more settled in his unwanted role at Landman's Drift. When a supposed hunting accident is followed by a hasty burial, he finds signs of an illegal duel and possible murder. The series keeps its focus close to the camp, its rivalries, and the ordinary soldiers caught in decisions made above them.

Expect a brisk blend of period detail, crime-solving, and battlefield danger. The books do not treat the British campaign as a simple adventure, and the historical events give Seb's cases consequences beyond the people immediately involved. Start with Scarlet Sash, since it introduces his post, his colleagues, and the wartime situation that shapes the second book.
