Kingdom of Ghosts starts with a land that has gone a long time without a king and a protagonist who could not care less. Merrik Niles is a thief, gambler, womanizer, and self-interested survivor, and at first he is just trying to steal something valuable and stay alive.

Then he touches the wrong artifact.

From that moment on, Merrik is stuck with three ghosts in his head, a jester, a swordsman, and a wizard, each with their own voice, opinions, and usefulness. The trick is fun, but it also shapes the whole series. Merrik is never alone again, and the ghosts keep dragging history, duty, and old claims into the life of a man who would have preferred another drink.

Greymond, the Scattered Kingdom, gives the trilogy room to sprawl. Rival claimants to the throne, scheming nobles, church power, civil war, and a threat beyond the Arrowhead Mountains all push the story past simple treasure hunting.

But the books never lose Merrik's point of view. He is not a shining chosen one. He is a reluctant center of gravity, always half a step from doing the selfish thing and sometimes surprising himself by not doing it.
