Series background & context
With Gestapo Mars, Gischler takes spy fiction, pulp science fiction, and alternate history and shoves them together on purpose. The result is the Carter Sloan series, built around a bio-engineered assassin and operative serving a Nazi empire that has stretched far beyond Earth.
Carter Sloan is the kind of lead Gischler likes, dangerous, sarcastic, and never fully in sync with the people giving the orders. He is thawed out into a future he does not control, then pushed through conspiracies, missions, and shifting loyalties where survival depends on staying useful.
Mars matters here. So do the larger reaches of this warped empire. The setting is not polished space opera. It is grimy, violent, and deliberately off-kilter, which lets the book swing between noir attitude and outrageous science fiction.
The long arc is less about heroism than about navigation. Sloan is trying to stay alive inside a machine built on cruelty, while deciding how much of himself is left and what, if anything, is worth resisting.
It is nasty, funny, and knowingly over the top. That is the point. If you like your science fiction with espionage, fascist nightmare worldbuilding, and a lead character who would rather mock the system than trust it, Carter Sloan is built for that mood.
