King of Scars Books in Order

The King of Scars duology returns to Ravka after the major events of the earlier Grishaverse books. War has left the country weakened, its borders threatened, and its people divided over what kind of future they want. The story is larger in scale than the Ketterdam heist books, with spies, rulers, soldiers, and Grisha all trying to keep a fragile peace from collapsing.

King Nikolai Lantsov is clever, charming, and good at projecting confidence. He is also carrying a dark magical legacy from the civil war, one that becomes harder to hide as he tries to rebuild Ravka's finances, secure alliances, and protect the Grisha Army. Saving the country may require him to travel toward the oldest and most dangerous parts of Ravkan magic.

He is not alone. Zoya Nazyalensky, a powerful Grisha general, has endured war and loss without becoming soft about either. Nina Zenik works undercover in Fjerda, a hostile country whose government treats Grisha as enemies. Their storylines show the conflict from the throne room, the battlefield, and behind enemy lines.

Ravka is trying to heal while its enemies are preparing to strike.

King of Scars sets up the political and personal problems facing Nikolai, Zoya, and Nina. Rule of Wolves brings those pressures together as Fjerda's army threatens invasion and old dangers refuse to stay buried. The books alternate among several viewpoints, so readers see how decisions made by leaders affect people far from the palace.

The tone mixes court politics, espionage, monster lore, grief, and moments of dry humor. It is interested in what happens after a revolution or a heroic war, when people still have to govern, mourn, and decide whom to trust. The characters are older in experience, if not necessarily in age, and their responsibilities are heavier.

These books can technically be read on their own, but they work best after the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. They reveal developments from those stories and gain much of their emotional force from the reader already knowing what Ravka and its people have been through.
