Author bio
Leigh Bardugo was born in Jerusalem and grew up in Los Angeles. She studied English at Yale, then took a winding route toward a full-time writing life, working in journalism, advertising, copywriting, and Hollywood makeup and special effects.
Writing was always the plan.
Before publishing a novel, Bardugo spent years learning what kind of process worked for her. Her early jobs sharpened different skills, from finding the right few words for advertising to building an illusion through makeup work. She has said she needed structure, and eventually learned that outlining gave her a way to finish the stories she wanted to tell.
Her first novel, Shadow and Bone, arrived in 2012. It introduced Ravka, a country divided by a dangerous sea of darkness, and Alina Starkov, an orphan soldier who discovers she has a rare power. The book began the Grishaverse, a shared fantasy world that later grew to include the Six of Crows and King of Scars books, as well as folktales, saint stories, and a graphic novel prequel.
Then came the heist.
With Six of Crows, Bardugo moved the action to Ketterdam, a crowded port city full of merchants, gangs, gamblers, and people with secrets. Kaz Brekker and his crew approach a nearly impossible job from different angles, and readers tend to come for the scheme but stay for the uneasy trust, sharp dialogue, and hard-won friendships. Crooked Kingdom raises the pressure without losing sight of the people caught in the plan.
Bardugo has also written beyond the Grishaverse. Wonder Woman: Warbringer follows a young Diana before she becomes the hero the world knows. The Language of Thorns reshapes the logic of classic fairy tales into stories that can be cruel, funny, romantic, or unsettling. Her historical fantasy The Familiar takes readers to Madrid during the Spanish Golden Age, where a servant named Luzia tries to turn a small gift for magic into a chance at freedom.
Her adult fantasy series began with Ninth House. The books follow Galaxy "Alex" Stern, a Yale student who can see ghosts and is drawn into the hidden magical work of the university's secret societies. It is a darker setting, built around old buildings, private rituals, class divisions, friendship, grief, and the trouble that follows when powerful people believe rules do not apply to them.
The settings may change, but Bardugo often returns to outsiders trying to make a place for themselves. Her characters are thieves, soldiers, students, servants, rulers, and survivors. They make bad calls, keep inconvenient promises, and sometimes find family in people they did not expect to trust.
She lives in Los Angeles and remains connected to Yale as an associate fellow of Pauli Murray College. Her work has reached readers across age groups, and the Grishaverse later made its way to the screen. But the appeal on the page is simple: complicated people, high stakes, and worlds that feel busy long after the main plot is over.
